To the beginner level climber, the idea of even using a climbing brush is probably pretty foreign. It might not make sense at first why you’d carry a Crush Brush around. As climbers become more and more experienced they find that having the perfect conditions can be the difference between sending and falling.
Brushing holds cleans off the small fragments of dirt, sweat, chalk, and loose rock that make it harder to get good friction. The Crush Brush excels at cleaning the rock off safely and efficiently.

Let’s go over some of the qualities that can be found in the Crush Brush and why it’s the best climbing brush for both climbing and bouldering.
Climbing Brush – Materials
Using the correct materials is potentially the #1 most important thing that makes a good climbing brush. Creating a brush that is both durable and reliable requires investing in quality materials. If the brush manufacturer cuts costs and puts inferior materials in the brush the quality will suffer.
The Crush Brush is made of the best materials out there.
- The handle is made out of a high strength polymer that is both rigid and strong. This is the ideal material for a climbing brush handle.
- The bristles (or fill material) is made of premium boars hair. This hair bristle has some very unique properties. It is rigid yet resilient. Boars hair is also abrasion resistant so that you don’t leave any material behind after brushing.
Many popular brushes can be found online for very low prices. These brushes are most likely made with very cheap plastics and filled with nylon bristles.
If you are buying a brush with the intention of polishing holds and then having the brush snap in half then these “climbing” brushes are perfect for you…
The fact is that most brushes are not designed as climbing brushes at all. Brushes are very popular for industrial uses and are often cheaply repurposed for climbing. These brushes are designed to be used on machinery or for gun maintenance, not rock climbing!
Don’t worry, the Crush Brush is not good for much else than climbing (although it could probably double as a dirtbag toothbrush in a pinch…).
Now, if you’re intention is to invest in a high-quality tool that is both aids in your success as a climber and preserves the rock for future generations then make sure to get a brush with the best materials.

Testing the Crush Brush
So let’s be real, talk is only just that, talk. We decided that it was a good idea to see exactly how tough the Crush Brush actual is when torture tested.
For this test, we needed to build a machine that would run continuously for hours on end brushing hundreds of thousands of times.
Enter the CRUSH-O-MATIC 3000! (Thanks Engineering Degree…)
This is just a teaser but we will tell you that we counted on a single brush brushing on sandstone over 100,000 times over the course of a few days. The Crush Brush only lost negligible 0.005″ or 0.13 mm of bristle length. To put that into perspective that about the thickness of a human hair.
Unless you climb all day, every day it will take you a long time to wear through an entire Crush Brush. You will probably actually get super jacked after doing 100,000 brush strokes in a row…
